Welding Jig

Description:

In this one-day intensive workshop, students will learn and practice the basics of how to design and fabricate professional, load-bearing frames out of steel. In each workshop, students will work together over the course of six hours to build an industrial work table for the metalworking shop of the new Asylum. These will be made of square steel tube with sold steel tops. Students will participate in the construction and assembly of the tables all the way from raw materials to finished product, and learn skills including measuring, layout, manufacturing of jigs, cutting, milling, and welding. Each student will get time to practice using milling machines, cold saws, mig welders, and angle grinders. This will be a good introduction to general structural steel construction techniques; the one-day intensive format will allow students to spend unbroken time getting comfortable on each machine.

Class Goals:

In this class students will learn every skill needed to build a load-bearing steel frame structure. These include layout, cutting, milling, grinding, jigging, and MIG welding. This class is structured such that it can be taken multiple times, allowing you to get more time and instruction on refining your metal fabrication skills with each iteration. This class will prepare you eventually for an advanced Metalworking Intensive class, to be offered in the future.

Prerequisites:

None.

Materials:

Materials will be provided by the Asylum.
